Revolutionising Composite Technology for Space Applications

CompPair was granted a European Space Agency (ESA) contract (ESA contract n°4000140708) under ESA’s Open Space Innovation Platform (OSIP) to develop slit tapes enabling the manufacturing of healable cryo tanks.

Ultimately, CompPair will provide cryo tanks that enable ultra-fast, non-intrusive repair in the space sector, significantly enhancing the sustainability and efficiency of composite materials in extreme environments.

The Challenge: Microcracking in Composites

Composites offer an excellent stiffness-to-weight ratio, high strength, corrosion resistance, and superior fatigue properties. However, they suffer from matrix microcracking, a phenomenon that weakens mechanical properties and increases permeability. To address this, CompPair is pioneering an ultra-tough matrix with intrinsic healing capabilities, overcoming a key limitation in composite applications—particularly for type V tanks.

Enabling Reuse and Cost Reduction in Space

The space industry is increasingly focusing on reusable systems and cost-efficient operations. CompPair’s smart resin technology offers a fast, non-intrusive repair solution that reduces scrap rates and eases maintenance. This innovation contributes to lowering production, operational, and maintenance costs, making sustainable composite solutions viable for the space industry.

Innovating Cryo-Tank Technology

CompPair is leading the way in space industry innovation by applying its healable technology to slit tape manufacturing for cryo-tank applications. Under ESA Contract No. 4000140708 within the OSIP framework, this project aims to:

  • Prevent micro-cracks in cryo tanks, even at extremely low temperatures.

  • Enable the development of type V tanks without internal liners, offering improved durability and efficiency.

  • Promote the adoption of sustainable composite materials in space applications and beyond.

Through this ESA-funded contract, CompPair is driving forward the next generation of composite technology, setting new standards for repairability, longevity, and sustainability in the aerospace industry.
